Vehicle Break Down While Driving? Know What To Do

Are you worried about knowing what to do if your car suddenly breaks down while you are out driving? These tips will help keep you safe and out of others' way while on the road.

Pull Off To The Side

If you notice something is wrong with your vehicle, but your vehicle is still moving at a fast enough speed, you'll want to pull off to the side of the road immediately. Do whatever you need to do to get off of the main road, by either pulling off to the shoulder, a parking lot, or a side street. This will keep you safe in your vehicle and be courteous to others.

Put On The Hazards

Other vehicles are likely not going to know what is going on when you are having vehicle problems while driving. It is a good idea to put on your hazard lights so that others will know to let you in so that you can get to the side of the road, or know to go around you if you are stopped in the actual road. While stopping in the road is not ideal, those hazards will let everyone know that you are not stopped temporarily.

Know Your Location

Not sure where you are? You'll want to figure out the location of where your vehicle is stopped. This may be easy if you are in a city since you can see some crossroads and landmarks like stores. If you are a bit further out in the city, it helps to know how many miles away you are from the last main road. This will help you relay the information to somebody to come help you, such as a towing company.

Pop The Hood

Even if you are not a mechanic, it is a good idea to pop the hood of the vehicle to get a general idea of what is happening with the car. Do you see smoke? Does something seem damaged or not right? Any information that you have can help relay to the person assisting you with what is wrong with the vehicle.

Call Roadside Assistance

You should now make a call to a roadside assistance service to get the help that you need. They may be able to perform a repair on the side of the road if you can accurately describe the problem, or tow your vehicle to a local auto repair shop so that you can get back on the road as soon as possible.
